The Kaziranga National Park authorities have declared the closure of the park for tourists from the 1st of June due to the start of the monsoon season.
This closing marks the annual closing of most of the National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries of the region. The huge amount of rainfall leads to flooding in different regions within these protected regions. This makes safari activities very difficult and sometimes impossible. This is also the mating season for several protected species and thus should not be disturbed.
This closure also marks the end of the 2021-2022 tourism season of the state. The season starts soon after the water levels withdraw and the safari routes are verified. This usually happens around in late September or early October depending on the rains. And the season closes in late may or early June.
The current season started on the 1st of October, 2021 and ends today. The 2021- 2022 season saw one the highest tourist visits in Kaziranga National Park over the years. The park recorded a total of 255675 tourists in this season. Out of this huge number, a total of 1687 were foreign nationals and 253988 were Indians. Both the numbers show an increasing trend in tourists inflow to Assam.
