The leopard which terrorized a small part of the Jorhat district of Assam was finally tranquilized today by the forest officials. It was then shifted to a secure location by the officials to be released later.
The leopard in question had injured 13 people including three officials with the Assam’s Forest Department. The incident took place in the Rain Forest Research Institute located in Chenijan of the Jorhat district. It was first found in one of the houses on the campus. And then injured several people as it tried to escape into the wilderness.
The ranger of the Jorhat Forest Range, Iqbal Ahmed mentioned that they had received information about the leopard on the morning of Monday. A team was dispatched immediately to the Rain Forest Research Institute. As two members of this team were injured by the wild leopard, they had to call for a backup team. Another official from the new team was also injured. Forest department officials decided to wait and observe the big cat through the night. They were finally successful in safely tranquillising it in the morning.
The Jorhat district has numerous tea gardens and the nearby forest areas. Thus leopards are not rare in this region of the state. But it still remains suspicious as to why this one decided to enter the inhabited region and cause so much damage and injury.
