Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary lies on the border of Guwahati in the Morigaon district of Assam. It is a paradise for wildlife and a must visit for all tourists to the region.
Best time to visit the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is the winters. The park opens for public sometime in the month of September after the flood waters dry up. The migratory birds usually start arriving in late November or early December as the winter starts to set in. And they stay in the vast open flood plains of the reserve till the weather starts to get warmer in February. Apart from the birds, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is also has one of the largest concentrations of the One Horned Rhinoceros in the world. And this, combined with the vegetation in the region makes confirm sightings even for anyone who visits.
Water buffaloes, leopards, macaques, and a variety of reptiles are all part of the amazing fauna of the region. It also has a large number of avian species permanently living in the region. There is also a tea garden about ten kilometer from the park.
This region of wilderness was declared a protected area in the year 1987. Located on the very edge of the city, it is one of the easiest to visit wildlife destinations of the state. It is about 45 kilometers form the Guwahati railway station and about 65 kilometers from the Guwahati Airport. It is also about 55 kilometers from the Inter State Bus Terminal located on the NH 37.
