As a part of Amrit Brikshya Andolan 2023, a massive number of saplings were distributed free of cost on Sunday. The Environment and Forest Department for the state of Assam took this initiative. The distribution event took place at the Veterinary College Ground in Khanapara.
The Environment and Forest Department of the state distributed about 3.25 lakh saplings on the day. This was also an attempt to break a world record in the presence of representatives of the Guinness World Records. The record was for the ‘distribution of the largest number of saplings in one day at a single venue.’ The Uttar Pradesh government holds the previous record for the same. The forest department arranged the saplings in a spiral, having a length of 22 km, if arranged in a straight line.
People from various walks of life collected these free saplings. A large number of students from various schools and colleges participated in the event and collected saplings from the ground. Members of self-help groups, non-governmental organisations, and other institutions also collected saplings on their behalf.
Assam chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma also attended the sapling distribution event. The Minister for Environment and Forest, Government of Assam was also present. And so were a large number of officials and employees of the department. They ensured the smooth and seamless distribution of the massive number of saplings.
The state government also aims to set several new records and break some of the existing records during this week. The chief minister mentioned that they will attempt to create a total of 9 world records. He added that all these records will be created during the Amrit Brikshya Andolan 2023. The state government has released a total of Rs 49 cr for this initiative. And aims to plant a total of 1 crore saplings of commercial viability by September 17.
