A Conversation with Veteran Photographer Bidya Sagar Baruah

On the occasion of World Photography Day, Team Discover East had a chat with veteran photographer from Assam, Bidya Sagar Baruah. Barua hails from Bokakhat and currently resides in Guwahati.

Q : When did you start doing photography? Which was your first ever camera?

A : I started Photography at a very early age and have been in the field of photography for the last 30 years . First camera I touched was a Click III, and later I bought a Canon FTb .

Q : What are the three most important qualities that every photographer should possess?

A : I believe that observation , creativity and hard-work builds the base of any photographer. Besides, there is the everyday struggle of updating oneself with innovative ideas and techniques.

Q : How would you define a ‘perfect photograph’?

A : I believe that the journey towards perfection is more valuable than reaching it, or having the illusion of being perfect. For me, perfection doesn’t exist .

Q : What is the most challenging part of being a photographer?

A : The most challenging issue is dealing with the frustration when one is not doing good. So is spoiling oneself with pride when very successful.

Q : What are the changes in trends you see when you started photography and now?

A : Photography has definitely been changing it’s perspective and trend in this digital age . It’s no more a domain of the arty lot but has become part of everyday communication. Hence bringing the mass culture has it’s own kind of ups and downs .

Q : What is your message to aspiring photographers?

If I think about message I would like to say that Photography is still a creative field though it has become a easy and everyday phenomenon . It’s going to certainly evolve and rise above the trend culture to a new hight as a form of art.
