Assam Chief Minister decides to set up Department of Climate Change

The new chief minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma has made a very important announcement on the World Environment Day 2021. He has announced the formal opening of a Department of Climate Change in the state of Assam.

This step is a very welcome change as will help to monitor and control all activities pertaining to the environment and climate in the state. This will also help to make the northeastern state a key global leader in the front of climate change issues.

  1. Adaptation and mitigation of issues related to climate change.
  2. To attract international funding from bilateral and multilateral institutions.
  3. To boost preparedness to handle changes in climate in the state and working on advanced warning systems.
  4. Work on new technologies and futuristic models for the development in power generation, urban development, renewable energy, water resources, agriculture and the allied sectors.

Most climate related issues rising from factories and industries are currently handled by the department of industries and commerce. While those pertaining to conservation, land and deforestation are handled by the forest department of the state.

This new department will definitely help to reduce the carbon footprint of state and make it a better place to live in.
