Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday inaugurated the first heliport of the state in Majuli. The heliport has been built over an area of about 15 bighas at Garmur Keralagaon which is approximately 35 kms from the Kamalabari ghat connecting Jorhat town via ferry.
The heliport facilitates landing of three helicopters simultaneously. As per reports, the port was built at the cost of about 50 lakhs.
The Chief Minister said that the heliport has been built with an aim to boost the tourism scenario in the Majuli which already boasts of being the largest inhabited river island in the world. Sonowal is also anticiapatimg that the heliport will facilitate influx of tourists to the river island.
This heliport is a breakthrough in communications to and from the largest river island of the world. The service will also provide a smooth and swift communication for tourists and visitors especially during the flood season. It will also help in times of emergency like illnesses or accidents.
With the helicopters becoming operational, the usual travel time of 1 hour (downstream) and 2 hours (upstream) will now be reduced to just a few minutes. Work on the Majuli – Nimati bridge is also expected to commence soon.
