Assam government on Friday has cut petrol and diesel prices by Rs 5 each and reduced the duty on liquor by 25%. This increase was a part of Covid Cess. The changed rates will come into effect from midnight today. The announcement came at a time when the fuel prices have been soaring high across the country.
Health and Finance Minister of the state Himanta Biswa Sarma made the announcement on Friday.
“… at the peak of Covid-19, we had levied an additional cess on petrol, diesel, and liquor. Now, the number of patients has reduced…I am grateful to my cabinet colleagues who agreed to my proposal this morning to rescind this additional cess. Hence, petrol and diesel will become cheaper by ₹ 5 per litre with effect from midnight tonight, benefiting lakhs of consumers across Assam,” Mr Sarma said in his speech, according to a PTI report.
Fuel prices often determine the prices of all other commodities and services. This price cut comes at time when the prices of petrol are touching Rs. 100 in many parts of the country, whereas the same is available in Assam at Rs. 85, which is lesser than even the neighboring state of Meghalaya.
