Baghjan Oil Well Fire Claims Two Lives

Bodies of two firefighters of Oil India Ltd (OIL) were recovered on Wednesday from a pond near the Baghjan fire site.

A massive fire broke out in the Baghjan Oil field of Tinsukia district in Assam on Tuesday. The duo went missing after the well caught fire. The oil well that blasted has been spewing gas since a blowout on May 27.


The bodies were fished out from the pond by a team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The two deceased have been identified as Durlov Gogoi and Tikheswar Gohain. The former was an accomplished footballer who played as a goalkeeper for the Assam football team in 1996-97.

Commenting on the situation Parimal Suklabaidya, State Environment and Forest Minister “The fire that broke out at gas well of Oil India Limited at Baghjan in Tinsukiahas spread in the nearby villages. We are worried. Oil India Limited is saying that the situation will be controlled in 6-7 days. We are doing our best to control the situation.”

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal informed that he had given the details of the Baghjan blowout to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a telephonic conversation.

“He (PM Modi) assured of all possible help to resolve the situation & provide relief to victims”, said Sonowal in a tweet.

As per a statement released by OIL, immediate compensation is being disbursed to the families of the deceased. Affected people in the surroundings areas are being accommodated at 12 relief camps at a safer distance.
