All mining operations of North Eastern Coalfields (NEC), a unit under Coal India Limited (CIL), have been temporarily suspended with effect from 3rd June. The decision of suspension was prompted by several conplaints and protests over the issue of coal mining in Dehing Patkai.
The announcement of the suspension was made in a statement released by the General Manager of North Eastern Coalfields, Coal India Limited. The statement said that the decision of suspension was approves by competent authority.
The statement also cited that although mining has been suspended, liquidation of the present coal stock will continue till the existing coal stock is exhausted. All necessary statutory formalities in this regard will be taken up with concerned statutory bodies.
On June 4, the Gauhati High Court had also accepted PILs. These sought a stay order on all mining operations in Dehing Patkai. The court directed both the Centre and State governments to submit all documents relevant to the matter.
