In view of the current Covid-19 scenario, the local authorities have decided to permanently close down the Hookah Bars in the city of Guwahati. Also tobacco and its related products will be available only with registered sellers.
A meeting between the local administration, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation, the State Tobacco Control Cell and the Department of Health and Family Welfare resulted in a few key decisions to take further the steps towards safety and better heath of the citizens.
Another very important decision taken out from the meeting was to ban the random and monitored sale of tobacco products in the city. From now on, only the registered vendors will be allowed to sale tobacco products like cigarettes, gutkha, and the rest.
Hookah joints of the city has been closed since almost a year because of the Covid-19 induced lockdowns. Also people are skeptic about visiting them with the fear of the pandemic.
Similarly a ban on the sale of all tobacco products in the vicinity of educational institutions exist, but hardly followed. Also unmonitored sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products has lead to the growth of addiction among younger generations. These steps are aimed to protect the youth by curbing chances of addition to tobacco, given that this region records the highest number of cancer cases in the country.
