Guwahati: The capital city of Assam took a major step towards a cleaner and more sustainable future by launching a state-of-the-art waste management fleet. This innovative initiative positions the city as a leader in adopting modern solutions for urban challenges.
The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) unveiled two cutting-edge mechanized road-sweeping machines and 60 electric Light Commercial Vehicles (e-LCVs) for door-to-door waste collection. The e-LCVs are a first-of-their-kind deployment in India for household garbage collection, showcasing GMC’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
The mechanized sweepers, costing Rs. 5.87 crore, will significantly improve cleanliness on major roads. These machines are designed to effectively control dust and ensure efficient sweeping, contributing to a more hygienic cityscape.
The addition of 60 e-LCVs, acquired for Rs. 6.69 crore, marks a significant boost to Guwahati’s waste management capabilities. These electric vehicles will not only enhance the city’s aesthetics but also address air pollution concerns. As a non-attainment city under the National Clean Air Programme, adopting e-LCVs is a crucial step towards reducing emissions and promoting sustainability. Also, GMC’s plans to establish fast charging stations will further support the efficient use of these vehicles, advancing the city’s green goals.
The event witnessed participation from prominent figures, highlighting the initiative’s importance. Mayor Mrigen Sarania emphasized the project’s positive impact on public health and environmental protection. He reiterated GMC’s commitment to improving civic services, and tackling air pollution under the National Clean Air Programme. And ultimately, enhancing the quality of life for Guwahati’s residents.
GMC’s innovative waste management fleet has the potential to serve as a model for other Indian cities. It demonstrates the effectiveness of modern technology in addressing urban challenges related to waste collection and emission reduction. With this initiative, Guwahati is paving the way towards a cleaner, healthier future for its citizens. It remains to see, however, if this step can improve the air quality of the city.
