The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rains for the coming days across Assam. As per the latest reports, the department has predicted heavy to very heavy rains in several districts. They also issued red alerts and orange alerts.
The department issued a red alerts for Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta and Bongaigaon districts. This warning was valid from the morning of Sunday to the morning of Monday. While Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Barpeta districts have the same alert from Monday to Tuesday. These regions are expected to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. Heavy rainfall means 7-11 cm of rain, very heavy means 11-20 cm and extremely heavy indicates more than 20 cm of rain in a 24-hour duration.
IMD issued an orange alert for Dhubri, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Nalbari, Dima Hasao, Cachar and Karimganj. This was valid from Sunday morning till Monday morning. The same has been issued for Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Goalpara and Bongaigaon districts for the next 24 hours. Meaning that these regions can expect heavy to very heavy rains.
They also issued a list of problems during this time period. Visibility may decrease with the chances of heavy rains. Water logging, broken branches, or uprooted trees can cause traffic congestion. Vulnerable structures including katcha houses can receive damage because of the rain. The occurrence of flash floods in several parts of the state is also a possibility. The government and local administration has already asked people to stay away from possible landslide-prone areas. The rains can also cause damage to standing crops as well as newly sown seeds. Lightning is another possibility during this season. The IMD has requested all citizens to maintain a strict vigil regarding how the weather changes. They also asked citizens to follow updates from the local authorities.
