Guwahati: The District Administration of the Kamrup Metropolitan District of Assam has issued an advisory for the residents of the district in view of the flood situation. The authorities have also issued a helpline number for any flooding-related problems in the district. The District Helpline Numbers are 1077/93654-29314 for such situations.
District Disaster Management Authority of Kamrup Metropolitan Distinct has issued this advisory. The advisory mentioned, “This is for the information of all concerned that the river Brahmaputra is flowing above its danger level of 49.68 m. In view of the increasing trend of the water level, all the people located on the riverfront, river banks and close to the river course are requested to stay alert for all possible breaches of the river banks or embankments or overflows. Moreover, in order to protect life and property, the general public is advised to take the same precautions as follows.”
Key points from the public advisory
The district administration has prohibited the plying of country boats on the Brahmaputra River and any fishing activity with these boats till any further other. Taking note of possible risks, they have also advised citizens not to drive or walk through flowing water. Authorities have also asked citizens to stay away from the floodwaters as much as possible as the same could be contaminated with sewage, chemicals or other hazardous materials. Also they must avoid trying to swim in any flooded river, riverine steam or any other flowing water body.
They have advised children and elderlies to stay in safe locations and be cautious of snakes, animals, and other hazards in floodwaters. The authorities have asked citizens not to touch or go near any submerged transformers, inverters, electrical posts or wires. If anyone is a trained swimmer, he or she can attempt to rescue anyone who accidentally falls into the water, otherwise, they should seek help from SDRF or VDP personnel.
The public has also been asked to follow local news and emergency alerts along with instructions from local authorities and emergency responders. In case of any evacuation orders from the authorities, the citizens must follow the same. They have also requested the public to be vigilant and inform any Govt, authority including DC Office, Circle Office, Local Police Station or Water Resources Department for immediate intervention of the Government so that life and property can be protected.
