The Government of Assam has decided to set new speed limits for all roads across the state of Assam.
This is a very important step towards maintaining road safety in the state. Over-speeding is the reason of a majority of the road accidents. Fixing and enforcing these speed limits will definitely improve the situation.
Private vehicles with capacity upto eight passengers can drive to a maximum of 100 on four lane roads with dividers or medians and 60 on Municipal roads and 70 on any other road. Commercial vehicle with the same capacity can drive at 80 on highways with medians or dividers, while the rest is same private vehicles with same capacity. Vehicles with the capacity of more than eight have the limit of 80 on highways, and 60 on any other road. Goods carriers can move at 70 on four lane highways, 40 within municipal limits and 60 on any other road. Three wheelers can run at 50 on highways and other roads but 40 in municipal areas. Two wheelers are go upto 80 on highways, 50 on municipal roads and 60 on any other road. All the limits mentioned are in kilometers per hour.
The administration tried to enforce these limits few months back. But since the government had not taken appropriate steps to tell the citizens about the same, there were a lot of conflicts regarding these limits as well as their enforcement. That is when the state administration and necessary departments took the initiative to spread the awareness. And after these months, this order has now come into force.
