Assam has already suffered two rounds of flooding this year and the third round is now underway. To that direction, The FERNS Society, a Non-Profit Organisation has started its efforts towards providing flood relief.
The first round of rains in the state caused heavy damages to the Dima Hasao District of Assam. Rains and subsequent landslides caused damages to both the both highways and railway tracks. And these damages severed all rail and road communications not only to the region but large parts of Northeast India. And the second round caused damages on the embankment of the river. This caused the huge parts of the Cachar District including the town of Silchar to be submerged. Its more than two weeks now, and the town is still surviving the floods without ample supply of food, water, electricity and healthcare. The current wave has been caused by non-stop rains in neighboring Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan. And significant damages were caused in Lakhimpur, Nalbari and Kamrup Rural districts.
The FERNS Society is a non-profit organisation registered under the Registrar of Firms and Societies, Government of Assam. It was formed by a group of socially active individuals working in different sectors who met during the flood relief operations in 2019. This organisation also carried out multiple relief operations during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has also worked towards several other social causes including urban afforestation and education. A small library was also set up by them in the Adingiri region of the city to encourage more and more people to read books.
This year Discover East is also supporting the flood relief efforts of The FERNS Society. Guwahati Foodie, a popular community of food enthusiasts and Trishoolin Yoga and Wellness, a prominent yoga school of the city is also collaborating in this effort.
