The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma today ceremoniously started the construction work of the first bridge connecting the largest river island of the world, Majuli to Jorhat.
This bridge is projected to be 8.25 kilometres in length and will be completed by the Ministry of Road Transportation and Highways with a cost of around Rs. 925.47 Cr. This project is of upmost importance to the people of Majuli, both from an economical and safety point of view.
The foundation stones of this bridge was laid years back during the tenure of the previous chief minister, Sarbananda Sonowal. The Bhoomi Pujan for the same was also completed during the same period. Once completed, this bridge will improve connectivity to the location manifold. The distance which usually takes between one and two hours by ferry will take few minutes once this project is completed.
During today’s event, the current chief minister announced the work on this project is due completion in forty eight months. Another key announcement was the construction of another bridge connecting Majuli to Lakhimpur district of the state. Government of Assam aims to complete this new project with its own resources at a cost of Rs. 750 Cr.
