A severe landslide has occurred in the Noney District of Manipur. Several dead bodies have been recovered from the site while a lot many people are still missing. The list of missing people include both civilians and army personal.
This severe landslide took place on the Jiribam – Imphal railway track. This track is under construction under the Northeast Frontier Railways to provide better train connectivity to the state. The exact location is near the Tupul railway station in the state. The station was still under construction. This station building and the labors’ camps have recieved the blunt blow of this force of nature.
As per the reports, more than ten bodies have been recovered till the evening around fifty more people are expected to be missing. Teams of both National Disaster Management Force and State Disaster Management Force are working hard to find survivors in the disaster site. Those with severe injuries have been airlifted to the best hospitals. Other injured people are being treated in the Noney Army hospital.
The heavy rainfall in the past few days has been said to be root cause of this severe landslide. Large areas of Assam are still under flood waters while much more parts are cut off. The newly constructed Haflong station and tracks was also severely damaged by landslides.
