The Chief Minister of Meghalaya launched a new project named Meghalaya Rafting on Friday. This project aims to promote Meghalaya as a rafting destination in the country. He officially launched Meghalaya Rafting at an event in the Whitewater Village in Umtham of the Ri-Bhoi district.
The Ri-Bhoi Water Sports and Tourism Cooperation Society and the Meghalaya Canoe Association have been working towards the promotion of rafting in Umtham. These organizations have hosted several rafting-related events in the past. Boys and girls of the locality have been trained in rafting and they now participate in various national and international events. And after realizing the potential of rafting, the state initiated this Meghalaya Rafting program.
Speaking at the event, the chief minister appreciated the efforts of the organizations towards promoting water sports. He assured his government will extend its support towards promoting rafting and canoeing in the state. Conrad Sangma also mentioned that his government believes in promoting innovative ideas and development in the state. He added that this location will be used not only to empower the local youth, but also to attract tourists. He also expressed his confidence that Meghalaya Rafting will be able to bring laurels to the state. As the government is working towards scientific development of talented sports persons in the days to come.
The CM also emphasized on the promotion of Umtham as a new tourist destination. And added that necessary network connectivity and infrastructure development will be carried out. Also steps will be taken for developing a tourism circuit and enhance the overall tourist experience.
He also mentioned the Megha Kayak Fest hosted in Umtham. Adding that the state is planning to develop the location to match international standards.
