Women Solar Engineers of Garo Hills provided solar power in the remote villages of Chokot block with the support of district administration.
These solar engineers have been working with Global Himalayan Expedition(GHE). The GHE conducts ‘Impact Expeditions’ to provide energy access to remote communities of Himalayas. So far, the organizations have electrified 95 villages.
Lauding the efforts of these Solar engineers, Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma said, “Inspirational news in times of Covid. First women solar engineers of Garo Hills working with @GHE_Connect provided solar power to households of remote villages of #Chokpot block with District Administration support. Villagers participated to bring electricity in record 3 days.”
Meghalaya requires 1700MW of power per year. However, it generates 970 MW. To bridge the gap, the state government is exploring the potentials of solar energy in the state. The state is aiming to generate 200 MW energy in Shillong by installing roof top solar panels.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma himself has transformed his official residence into a solar energy net metering facility. The govt also hopes to expand this facility across all the government institutions.
With these efforts, the state government aims at making Meghalaya a self-sufficient energy state.
