This Rs. 209 crore project has been funded by National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) which will act as a step towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for Atmanirbhar Bharat by making Meghalaya a self-sufficient state in pork production.

A cheque of ₹ 52.36 Cr as the first installment of the Piggery Mission was handed over to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma by Union Minister Kailash Choudhury during the launch.

The Chief Minister thanked the government of India and NCDC for enhancing Meghalaya’s potential in this direction.

Pork or pig meat is one of the highest consumed meats worldwide and accounts for the majority consumption in the northeastern states of India. Although innumerable small scale piggeries are currently running in the region, its far less than the demand of the region. So the states of the region often have to import the produce from outside the region. Hence, this step will definitely help not only the Meghalaya but also the rest of the northeastern states.
