Nagaland Chief Secretary Temjen Toy on Thursday informed that the Nagaland government has decided to ban commercial import and trading of dogs and dog markets. The ban is also imposed on the sale of cooked and raw dog meat as stated by Toy.
The decision was taken by the Nagaland Cabinet as informed by the Chief Secretary. Making the announcement Toy also appreciated the cabinet’s decision on putting the ban on the trading and sale of dogs and dog meat.
This decision comes a day after the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO) appealed to the state government to put an immediate ban. FIAPO said that this business in Nagaland was utterly illegal and in complete violation of various laws such as the Indian Penal Code 1860.
It had also asked the state government to take necessary steps to spread awareness about dog meat. Also willingness was expressed to work with the government to inform the public.
This decision is welcomed by all animal rights activists and animal lovers across the country. Previously the illegal trade of dogs and their meat in the state was a cause of serious concern.
