Located in the Northeastern part of India, the small state of Sikkim was among the first to put a completely ban fireworks. Sikkim boosts about its nature and organic lifestyles and there is a genuine reason for the same.
An order was issued by the Government of Sikkim, back in the December banning fireworks of all kind in the state. The order bans not only the lighting or bursting of fireworks but also the production or sale of them within the state. Any kind of fireworks either for illumination or for sound production are prohibited in the state under the Environment (Protection) Act of 1986. It was passed by the Forest, Environment and Wildlife Management Department of Sikkim.
Not only firecrackers, the state of Sikkim has a very strict environment policy in place. This includes limiting of tourist to the ecologically risky regions of the state. Regulations are also in place regarding the entry and movement of vehicles in different part of Sikkim.
In the beginning of October, Sikkim had announced a ban on the use of disposable water bottles or portable water. The government has given a buffer time of two months to finish off the existing stock. The state’s law and order section of police has also issued an order to ban fireworks.
