The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma today inaugurated an online portal for booking tickets for ferries connecting Uzanbazar Ghat in Guwahati to the island of Umananda.
The river Brahmaputra flows through the state and creates immense possibility in both transportation and agriculture. In a step to boost the river tourism sector of state, the Inland Water Transportation Department of the Government of Assam has opened up its services for online booking. First to add to the online service was the ferry service between Nimatighat and Majuli. And now the ferry services connecting Umananda to the Guwahati city has also been added.
The small Peacock Island is one of the smallest inhabited river islands on the mighty Brahmaputra river. It is home to a temple of Lord Shiva and a group of Golden Langurs. This tiny island also offers a rarely seen yet very beautiful view of the city of Guwahati. Its just a 10 minutes ferry ride from the Uzanbazar Ghat.
Two way tickets for the island are available at the venue. Government ferries are available from around 9 AM to around 4 PM and ply to and fro Umananda. The tickets are not time bound, meaning that you can board any ferry to or fro on the journey. These tickets can now be booked online from asiwt.in .
He also launched a series of four steel catamaran vessels for passenger service on the Brahmaputra river.
