The Minister for Environment and Forest reviewed the current status of the Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park and also the creation of new infrastructure to boost tourist inflow to the park.
The minister reviewed the problems and prospects of the park with the senior official of the forest department. He asked the park officials to explore every possible avenue to build green infrastructures for tourists in the park. “To attract tourists, amenities have to be created, including accommodation inside the park premises,” Parimal Suklabaidya said.
Plans regarding setting up eco friendly guesthouses by the Dhansiri river on the west of the park was also discussed. Possible involvement of Assam Tourism Development Corporation were also discussed alongside the construction of a bridge inside the park.
Parimal Suklabaidya also asked the DFO and Social Forestry of Darrang district for proper afforestation in the newly added buffer regions of the national park. Alongside the issue of encroachment and status of necessary action were also discussed.
Efforts to stop poaching inside the national park and preparedness for the annual floods were also discussed in the meeting. The park currently has 40 anti poaching camps with eight watch towers covering an area of 79.28 sq km. And two speed boats, two motorized boats and thirty country boats are ready to be pressed into rescue operation of wildlife during flooding.
