The Covid – 19 global pandemic has hit the tourism sector the hardest and it will take the longest to recover. As a form of preparedness for the Post Covid-19 scenario, Assam Tourism and ATDC has come up with a very novel idea of Inside the State Tourism.
The state of Assam has a wide variety of tourism resources ranging from nature to culture. And due to the variety of landscapes, different activities like trekking, cycling, rafting, safaris and many other form of air, water and land based adventure activities are possible. The diversity in ethnicity has also created a diaspora of endemic traditions. For example, to experience the Tai Phake traditions, one can to go to Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts, while the best place to enjoy traditional Holi celebrations would be Barpeta. One can also explore the unity between different religions in Hajo or experience the unique lifestyle in the world’s largest river island of Majuli.
This idea of Inside the State Tourism encourages the citizens of the state to travel far and wide inside Assam itself in order to explore and enjoy the various unique resources of the state. It will also help people to look beyond the age old ideas of using only Kaziranga and Tea to promote tourism in the state. The Chairman of Assam Tourism Development Council, Jayanta Malla Baruah highlighted this in his speech on the occasion of World Tourism Day in Chandubi.
This will not only help the citizens to gain first hand knowledge of the state, but also keep the tourism machinery on the move. Once the pandemic is over, local people will be in a much better position to serve large number of both domestic and foreign tourists. Also new locations will be discovered and resources will grow up in this process.
In order to help people of Assam to explore their own state, a previously existing Scheme named Punya Dham will be tweaked, informed the Vice Chairman of ATDC, Navadeep Kalita.
