The Manas National Park is a part of the greater Indo – Burma Biodiversity Hotspot. This means that these thick rain forests are home to a huge variety of flora and fauna. The lush green forests, the amazing animals and birds and the beautiful weather makes it one of the best places to visit. And if you love being one with nature, one of the best places to stay is the Mathanguri .
Location
Mathanguri is located on the edge of the Manas National Park right on the banks of the Manas River. Manas National Park spans across multiple districts of Assam and under the administration of Boroland Tourism. To reach Mathanguri, one needs to go to the Bansbari Range Office of Forest Department with necessary identification.
The Trip
If you are coming from Guwahati, try to leave after an early breakfast. You can also grab something on your way to Bansbari. But make sure not be to be too late because you wont be allowed to go inside after 2 PM.
Pro Tip : There is this tiny shop near the Bansbari Range office who gives awesome local food at a very affordable price. You can grab your lunch here.
Once you are done with lunch, document verification and checking, you are ready to go to Mathanguri. The road to the Inspection Bungalow goes through the very scenic Manas. So if you are lucky enough, you can spot some really beautiful wildlife. This beautiful stretch will last for about 3 hours if you go slow and enjoy the nature. We had seen peacocks, wild elephants, bison, deer, rhinos and a variety of wild and beautiful birds.
The Destination
The Mathanguri Forest Inspection Bungalow is one of the most beautiful places to stay in the whole Northeastern part of the country. It overlooks the beautiful Manas river and its flood plains which gradually rise into the hills of Bhutan.
Its really beautiful at night with no sound except the river flowing and the occasional calls of wild animals and birds. With electricity being managed by a generator, it is lights out at 8 PM in Mathanguri IB. Its advised not to walk outside after sundown as wild animals often venture out in the area.
However you can take a stroll early in the morning. You can even take a safari of the Manas National Park or go rafting on the Manas river if you are adventurous enough. Do inform the caretaker if you want any such activity. He is also the go-to person for all your food related needs. Since the resources are limited, do not expect a gourmet meal. But experience the simple and rustic food prepared by the people staying there.
Do not miss out on the beautiful sunrise and sunset by the beautiful river. Word of caution though, the water is very cold.
