In view of the rising levels of water in the Brahmaputra river, the Inland Water Transport Department has decided to suspend the ferry services between Jorhat and Majuli. This order was issued on Thursday.
The order mentioned that the ferry services were suspended at the Aphalamukh Ghat in Majuli. As many as three ramps at the ghat were reportedly submerged overnight. This led to the suspension of the ferry services to the Nimati ghat as well.
Ferry owners mentioned that the ferries had to be turned back. Since the ramps were submerged by the water levels, it became impossible to dock the ferries at these ghats. Also new ramps cannot be prepared immediately as the ground is unstable.
They also mentioned that since they are working to find an alternate location for the ferries to dock. Unless the water level subsides or the new docks are discovered, the ferry services are expected to remain suspended to the island district.
The term of the suspension is not known yet as the water levels show no sign of receding. Heavy rains have taken place in the upper stretches of the state in the last few days. This has led to the rise in the water levels.
