The Director of the Inland Water Transport Department of Assam has announced the construction of a state-of-the-art Guwahati Gateway Ghat Terminal. This new infrastructure will come up in the Fancy Bazar region of Guwahati. And it will be completed by December 2024.
The project will improve the waterways connectivity across the state and the entire region. The ferry terminal of Guwahati is one of the first steps in the promotion of this low-cost mode of transportation. The officials have informed that the terminal will initially be used only for passenger ferries. And it will later be extended for cruises and commercial vehicles. At the time of launch in December 2024, this project will have the capacity for four large ferries to be parked simultaneously.
The CM laid the foundation stones for this project earlier this year in the month of May. The project will be complemented within two years. And it is being implemented by the L&T GeoStructure based out of Chennai in Tamil Nadu.
Director of the Inland Water Transport of Assam Partha Pegu mentioned that this project will be equipped with several amenities similar to the terminals in Singapore. It will have a cafe, a canteen and ramps for vehicles. A existing multilevel parking lot will stand on the opposite side of the road.
According to reports, Guwahati Gateway Ghat Terminal will cost Rs 304 Cr which has been invested by the World Bank. It will have an all-weather working capacity unlike most of the existing terminals in the state.
