Using waterways a mode of communication is nothing new in our country. But a dedicated and organised water taxi service is definitely a first. And it has started operation is the Mumbai – Navi Mumbai route. This service will decrease the travel time by almost half compared to the usual roadway route.
It was inaugurated yesterday by the Chief Minister of Maharastra, Uddhav Thackeray and Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was present virtually. Mumbai – Thane was first railway route of the country and now Mumbai – Navi Mumbai is the first water taxi service.
This new service will not only help daily commuters by reducing the travel time, but also tourists. Not only can they enjoy the experience, but also visit the Elephanta caves. Each passenger can carry upto 10 kilos of luggage on each trip, and any access will be charged at Rs. 1000 per kilo. Provisions are also there for monthly passes for daily commuters.
Water Taxi Routes
The following are are the current routes where this service can be availed.
- Domestic Cruise Terminal at Ferry Wharf in Mumbai Mumbai to the terminals at Belapur in Navi Mumbai.
- Belapur to the Elephanta Caves.
- Belapur to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust.
- International Cruise Terminal to Elephanta Caves.
- Domestic Cruise Terminal to Rewas, Karanjade and Dharamtar.
- Domestic Cruise Terminal to Belapur, Nerul, Vashi and Airoli.
- DCT to Khanderi islands and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust.
Ticket Prices

- Between Domestic Cruise Terminal and Belapur : Rs 1210.
- Domestic Cruise Terminal and Dharamtar : Rs 2000.
- Domestic Cruise Terminal and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust : Rs 200.
- Karanja and Domestic Cruise Terminal : Rs 1200.
- Domestic Cruise Terminal and Kanoji Angre : Rs 1500.
- Belapur and Nerul : Rs 1100.
- Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust and Belapur : Rs 800.
- Domestic Cruise Terminal – Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust – Elephanta Caves – Domestic Cruise Terminal : Rs 800.

Water Taxi Timings
- The services will operate 330 days a year and thrice a day between 8 AM to 8 PM. Boats will be plying in the morning, afternoon and evening slots.
- The boats will take 15 minutes to take the commuters from Mumbai to Elephant and JNPT.
- And from Mumbai to Belapur, Nerul, Vashi and Rewas it will take half an hour.
