In a bid to develop the tourism infrastructures of the state and entire Northeast Indian region, the government has opened an immigration office in the state.
Previously immigration facilities for foreigners was available only at the Guwahati International Airport in Assam. Meaning the foreign tourists can come directly to the state of Assam, only if they take the aerial route. Otherwise they would have to come via some other city and route of the country to land in the state.
With the opening of this new immigration office in Dhubri, foreigners can now use the waterways. They can directly check in at this new office before travelling into the other parts of the region. This will not only make the region easier and cheaper to access by foreign tourist. It will also eliminate the need of travelling to other cities just for the formality, thus saving additional time and money.
The office was officially opened for accepting foreign tourists on Friday by Jayanta Malla Baruah. He is the Tourism Minister of Assam. Additional chief secretary of Assam, Maninder Singh was also present. And the foreign tourists onboard the Ganga Vilas Cruise were the first to utilize this facility on the same day.
The Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbanada Sonowal also expressed his happiness about this incident. He also informed that the immigration process of the foreign tourists was completed in just 35 minutes. The former Assam CM also expressed hope that it will usher in an era of new tourism opportunities into the state.
