The Siachen glacier located in the upper Himalayas is known as the world’s highest battleground. Located in then Ladakh region of India, the Siachen Base Camp is now open for domestic tourists from India.
The Chief Executive Councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council flagged off the first batch of travelers who left for on the Siachen Base Camp. The Member of Parliament from Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal was also present for the formal flag off event. And the announcement came via the social media handle of the Department of Tourism of Ladakh on the occasion of the World Tourism Day 2021.
Previously under strict military control, no civilians were allowed to visit this region. Due to strict laws of the region in the past years only permitted vehicles were allowed to enter even in the summers. These locations are inaccessible via road during the winters because of heavy snow and ice. Nonavailability of proper infrastructure for travelling was another reason why public were not permitted to to travel there previously. As of now this region is open only for Indian nationals, given its border location and strategic importance.
The scenic beauty of the cold desserts of the Leh – Ladakh region attract tourists from all over the country. Creation of a new destination will attract even more tourists to this location.
The state of Assam also released a list of new destinations in the state which can be explored by visitors on the occasion of World Tourism Day.
