Temples of Nilachal Hill : Abode of Maa Kamakhya

Located on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River is the Nilachal Hill, commonly known for the Kamakhya Temple. But the temple of Maa Kamakhya isn’t the only one located on the hill. Team Discover East compiles a list of all the attractions on Nilachal Hill. All of them are open for devotees all year round except during the Ambubachi Mela.

Kamakhya Temple

The most widely known destination on the hill is definitely the Shakti Peeth of Maa Kamakhya. Home to the famous Ambubachi Mela, this is the most visited religious destination of Northeast India.

Dwarpaal Ganesh Mandir

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Ganesh is worshipped before any other god. So it is natural that there is a Ganesh temple at the very start of climbing the hill. And hence, this temple gets its name.

Bagalamukhi Mandir

The temple of Maa Bagalamukhi is the one nearest to the temple of Maa Kamakhya. It usually wears a deserted look but on festival days and on every Tuesday hundreds of devotees visit this temple to seek blessings from the Goddess.

Bhubaneshwari Mandir

The Maa Bhubaneshwari temple was built on the very top of the Nilachal Hill. Since it is relatively unknown to a lot of devotees, the place generally has a very serene vibe to it.

Other attractions

There are multiple viewpoints on the hill. While two of them overlook the bustling Guwahati city, two more overlook the Brahmaputra river. One can get a beautiful view of the north bank of the river as well.

Also, the Soubhagya Kund is another attraction that you should not miss out on if you are in Kamakhya. It is a small pool next to the main temple, but the surprising fact is that this pool never dries up.

One of the very few temples of Lord Vishwakarma is located at the foot of the Nilachal Hills. This comparatively smaller shrine in the Nilachal Hills, but it gets a massive footfall on Vishwakarma Puja every year.

How to Reach the Nilachal Hill

The nearest railway station is Kamakhya Junction, located around three kilometres away while the Guwahati station is about five kilometres away. Guwahati is the nearest airport located about thirteen kilometres away. Assam State Transport Corporation busses for the temple run from Kachari at regular intervals. And sharing taxis are available at the foot of the hill throughout the day.
