A decision taken by the local administration now stops the functioning of two wheeler taxi services in Shillong. It stops the working of both online and offline businesses working in this field.
Bike taxi businesses like Uber and Rapido have become quite popular in the city. The comparatively smaller streets and large number of vehicles cause traffic woes in the city of Shillong, specially during the peak hours. Also with the very limited parking spots available, more and more people are using travelling using public transport systems. And since bikes can traverse the streets with comparative ease, people have started using them more often.
The order was passed by the office of the District Transportation Officer of the East Khasi District of Meghalaya. The order mentions that under the sub section (i) of the section 66 of the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, using two wheelers as taxi is not allowed. Meaning that these vehicles cannot be used to ferry passengers in a commercial scale. It also mentioned that strict action will be taken against any violators.
The decision generated mixed reactions among the local public. Since a good number of local youths are depending on these two wheeler taxi services for their livelihood.
