Biking has always been seen as a male dominated area. It’s the dream of a large section of the ladies to learn driving a motorcycle and go alone on a ride. Only a few get the opportunities to transform this dream into reality to become lady bikers.
Few women from Northeast are rocking this area with panache. On the International Female Ride Day, we bring to you a few names which have paved the path for the generations of adventurous travel loving ladies to follow.
- Dharitri Terangpi
Dharitri has always been passionate about riding. She is a competitive motorcyclist, long distance rider and photographer. Dharitri is a member of the Assam Bikers,and has ridden from Guwahati to Delhi, a distance of more than 8,000 kilometres (5,000 mi). She believes in female empowerment, and is establishing an awareness campaign of safe riding among the biker groups of Northeast India.
- Nirmali Nath
Nirmali has been travelling from one place to her another since her childhood as she was born to a family with army background. These shifts gave Nirmali an opportunity to explore new places and meet new people. Nirmali wanted to explore more. To begin her explorations, Nirmali bought an RE Classic 350 and named it ‘Wanderbug’.
Nirmali bought her second bike RE Himalayan which named ‘Panda’ which she prefers more than her first one. She represented North East India on international platform as well. She participated in the Women Riders World Relay, baton take over from Nepal and handed over to Bangladesh. Route covered: Kakarbitta, Nepal- Siliguri- Howly- Guwahati- Pongtung, meghalaya- Dawki- Tamabil border, Bangladesh- Guwahati.
- Onen Nenty
Nagaland’s Onen Nenty is a woman with multiple talents. She is a banker, a musician, biker as well as an YouTuber. Nenty has been touring across India since 6-7 years. She was also a part of Rape Free India campaign, an initiative that involves 2 bike riders (1 male and 1 female) travelling across 29 States and 7 Union Territories 400+ districts and 700+ cities 2000+ villages to raise awareness about the prevention of rape and sexual abuse, and promotion of gender equality.
- Anee Sharma
Anee Sharma from Assam has always had a penchant for riding a bike. She had a dream to ride anywhere on Earth. Luckily for Anee, her passion for riding was supported by her parents. She started riding Scooty at a very early and then learnt a bike. She chose the Royal Enfield Classic 350cc as her first bike. Anee also happens to be the first female biker to reach the Bumla Pass. She is also a photography enthusiast with an interest in cooking.
- Rosalynn Lianhmingthangi
From riding a Bajaj Pulsar 180 to a Bullet Classic 350, this girl has changed the scene in Mizoram. After learning to ride a bike from her friends, she never turned back. As a member of the Aizawl Thunders, she rode with the team from Aizawl to Nepal for the 9th Enfield Rendezvous and Poker Run in 2017. She has also travelled to Tawang and has never missed a North East Riders Meet since 2011.
